1950s-60s usability, what do they ride like?

Postby tigcraft » Sun Apr 26, 2020 6:08 pm

At some point I could be interested in something from that era but what do they ride like compared to British of the same times? Are they leak free, reliable and ‘light’ to ride by any chance?

Fifty years ago I was riding a 1965 R50s. It was oil tight, had good brakes, instant starting, utterly reliable light and easy to handle. Would happily go from 10 mph to 90 mph in top gear two up! In spite of its 90k on the clock.
Bought as a reaction against a mobile pneumatic drill I had bought new called a BSA A65 Lightning.

Stretch your parameters a bit. An early 5 series flat twin would be a great choice. A pre disc brake R60 or R75.

leak free, reliable and light.

My R50 is not the quickest.....I have taken it to the Los Indianos rally in Colombres most years, 1000 miles in a week.

Hope this helps

Cheers Chas, simplicity at its best. I do like the linked pics. Have you had it long ? It looks rewarding to ride. Eric
