Tatty RT for sale!

Postby windmill john » Wed Mar 13, 2019 4:48 pm

Those with a sensitive disposition, look away now.

Very sad to see it in this state.

However..... if I had a garage..........

EG, all the ones that got butchered into half bikes by people that think number plates at the side and having half a seat look good.

There is a plus side. For those that want hard to find cosmetic bits can do so quite cheaply. Have you seen how much you can get full fairings for, under £30 a throw if you try hard.

I got one the correct colour fairing for my accident damaged r80rt for £30 via eBay, mind you I waited a year for the correct colour to come up and I had to drive from South Wales to York to get it, but I still consider it a bargain !

Ended with no sale which is very sad... I'd say it was probably worth a punt at that price. Looks to be all there and the only thing I can see that's wrong is that the rocker covers are on the wrong sides.

If it wasn't for the facts that it is a) so far away and b) I'd undoubtedly be killed if I got another bike, I'd be inclined to give him a call and make an offer.

There are always a few on and not many of them actually sell through ebay, they all end early and obviously sell outside ebay in private deals.
Amongst others I am currently watching this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K75-RT-F ... 2575472314
Because I want one and also this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-R80-100- ... 3093008193
which seems like a good start.

I won't buy either as I have enough on my plate right now.

The 75 looks quite clean.
Re the 80, I always worry about bikes when the carbs and exhaust are off, it’ll shove the rebuild price up if the valve gear and barrels are shot.

The 'RT has potential. As John says, the lack of carbs and exhausts is worrying and a couple of lines in sellers the description (i.e. 'No V5, needs to be applied for by the winning bidder.' and 'I pulled it of a hedge in deepest darkest Brum') gives me some concern that the sale may not be completly legit. The Lester wheels (at least, I think that's what they are) might be worth a bob or two though.

Well, that's Ritmo Sereno's handywork... My comment was referring to the self-appointed "custom garages" which grew all over the place and ask for a five figure price for butchered airheads with flat brown seat and knobbly tires :bounce:

Can I commit sacrilege and say that I'd rather have a stock 'RS or 'RT any day. I just don't like that look. To my way of thinking it just doesn't look 'right'. It's undoubtedly a superb piece of technical engineering but as a practical motorbike, there are so many things that just make me think 'What the heck did he want to do that for???!

Perhaps he had an engine and wanted to do something with it. Personally in the absence of proper bits I would have made a generator or something else useful.

I wouldn't mind giving it a whizz round the lanes ..... but I wouldn't want to own it, and I certainly wouldn't pay good money for it !

Do bikes always have to be about practicality, luggage capacity, comfort tank range etc.
Can't they sometimes be just about having fun.
I'm lucky enough to have two bikes.
My 1100RS fits all the criteria of a practical, useable sensible motorcycle.
My R NINE T Racer on the other hand is like sitting on one end of an ironing board holding onto a broomstick at the other.
I wouldn't have it any other way, because whenever I want to go out and enjoy the basic thrills of riding a bike, that's the one I'll take.
I really can't understand why some people recoil in horror at the very idea of a bike built for looks, fun, and nothing else.
It's like we've become the motorcycling equivalent of the Amish.

Only kidding Andy.

If I had the space, the idea of a fair weather bike sounds good, I’d just rather not have it on charge and then start lots of threads about the best charger to buy... and my bike won’t start, it’s been sat for months etc..... should I have drained the fuel etc.
It’s all personal, I’d admire good engineering, not crappy chopping.
My view is old fashioned, I do want a front mudguard that works and not for show, but I get where you’re coming from.

Hey... as long as you ride, that’s the most important.

My repulsion at these things is merely that I cannot see anyone making a bike from sum bike bits and bits of pipe being more capable of doing it than the professional bike designers. If I wanted a racing bike I would probably buy a Japanese crotch rocket safe in the knowledge that the design of the bike is as safe as it could be given the design criteria. I find sawing bits off the frame for whatever reason to be absolutely ludicrous.

I do see that argument.
I have to admit that I could never bring myself to attack a perfectly good bike with a grinder, however I do so admire people with sound skills who do it well.
These people of course are few and far between, and there are a lot of people out there who think they can do it, but who soon realize the enormity of the task and give up.
Just look at the number of "unfinished projects" turning up on ebay as proof of that.
There is a local guy here who's done an amazing job with a CX500.
The quality of his work is impeccable, and he's turned one of the most anonymous bikes ever made, into a thing of breathtaking beauty.
Hat's off to the guy I say.

Educate me. Is this one well done?
I can't see anything but half a bike. Having sold for £11k it should have something going for it but it eludes me.

Even I have to say that that's on a totally different scale to the orange one. I just don't like the orange one. This one is... well I can't think of a word I'd use in polite society (or even this forum  ), lets just say most combinations of two words with the second one being 'up'!!!

It's currently listed at £1,069, reserve not met, relisted due to overseas buyer...

It's kind of irrelevant.
People buying those bikes, in my experience, are more versed into fashion and "lifestyle" than things mechanical or even motorcycling experience. They are the ones who by buying airheads and W650s at five times their market values have made the prices skyrocket.
