Date of manufacture

Postby Mjolinor » Sat Nov 21, 2020 8:37 pm

I bought a little Honda first registered on the first of April 1981, Obviously it qualifies as historic on the first of January 2022.

The question is how long is it from manufacture to being available in the showroom. I can pay Honda £30 and get a letter stating the date of manufacture but it is only worth it if it was made in 1980 because then I can have historic status in a few weeks.

I have no concept of how long it took a company like Honda to get it out of the factory and ship it to the UK in the 1980s.

To be Honest, I don't think I'd bother. In essence, you're spending £30 (+postage) on the off chance that you might save £44.00... but more likely won't.

It's nearer £80 with MOT + tax. Need some probability figures, maybe it is worth the gamble but I have no idea how long it takes.

If nothing else it adds provenance to the bike and a £100 to its end price ???

Too many variables... if it was a not very popular model, it may have sat around in a showroom for months before being sold... if it was a popular type, then it might have been effectively sold before it was in the country. Another factor that occurs to me is that, in those days, April was the changeover date for the registration letter and a lot of dealers delayed registering vehicles to get the new letter. This would mean it may be older than you might expect.

It also depends on what you intend to do with the bike and whether is is currently MOT'd and/or taxed.

If the bike is original, you may be able to get a hint by looking at the Honda brochures... Japanese manufacturers seem to have changed things like colour schemes and details on an annual basis. Won't prove anything but may give some indication as to whether it's worth persuing it. To my mind, it's still a lot of effort on the offchance of saving a few quid.

With my 'RS, it's a bit different. I know from BMW records and detail changes that it was produced in 1981 but it wasn't registered till 1984. Quite what the story is, I'm still not sure... there are indications that it might have been configured for continental use and reconfigured prior to sale but I can't think of any way to prove or disprove that... Since we're talking about 3 years tax and MOT, I will definitely be seeking to get confirmation of age when the time comes...

I certainly don't think it'll add anything to the value... after all, the best case scenario for the 'tax' thing will effectively establish that it is 'a year' older than it appears from the registration.

August was the letter change month.

It came with the original purchase receipt which I thought was interesting. It cost the same as I paid for it. :)

Meh, I aint from Tykeland, Lancashire lad I am.

I suppose one could be forgiven as Burnley has Tykeland on three sides, like a bubble of normality in an otherwise very foreign place.

There is some possible credence to it being 1980. The purchase date is actually 18th August 1981. The registration date is 1 April 1981.

It is a common habit that dealers will register vehicles that have not sold and are hanging around when they have a bad month and fail to make their quota.

I emailed Honda, let's see what they say. :)
