15W50 oil for a 2005 F650GS Dakar with 870 km

Postby r75boxer » Wed May 09, 2018 1:03 pm

Yup, that's not a typo. Over Christmas I purchased a 2005 F650GS Dakar with 870 km on the odometer and still with the so-called break-in oil. The manual calls for 15W50 mineral oil. I cannot source that combination in Canada. 10W40 and 20W50 mineral are easy to obtain but only synthetic in the aforementioned viscosity range. The manual clearly says not to use synthetic oil. The 10W40 seems a bit light as our temperature often start at 10C but quickly rise to 30C. Does anyone have experience or a recommendation for such a low mileage bike?

Apparently the fellow bought it for a 'bucket' trip to Alaska and changed his mind about going and riding in general. I'm hearing this second hand from his best friend but suspect he never rode before, or very little, and was not at ease riding it. The bike was then stored in a heated garage.

Further to my query, I just spoke [again] to my local BMW dealership regarding sourcing this particular grade of oil. They received no reply from BMW Canada after repeated attempts to contact.

P.S. Sorry to open another thread on oil type/viscosity.

Most break in oil doesn't stay in the motor that long anyway, some auto manufacturers run the motor far less than half an hour before draining the break in oil - manufacturing tolerances are much closer these days and extended running in is not really necessary.
That assumes that you require the dino as a running in oil-------------------.
The difference between a 15/50 and 20 /50 probably isn't worth bothering about anyway - there is a range of viscosities for each grade and a thick 15 is not much different to a then 20.
BMW'S current recommendation for the Rotax is a brand name MA2 Motorcycle oil, Semi Synth in 10/40 or 20/50 grades for most climatic conditions, and the obsolete recommendation in your old book can be safely disregarded. The have been recommending synth for airheads for 25 years----------------.
Rotella 10/40 T2 Synth Diesel oil also complies with MA2 standards and is eminently suitable for our bikes.
Best to ask oil questions on the Bobistheoilguy forum , as some guys actually know something about oils over there -------------------.

Yes and shares the oil with the transmission.

MA2 oil is compatible with wet clutches, as it is not friction modified.
20/50 friction modified oil of any sort is actually extremely hard to find as FM oils are usually ?/30 wt at a maximum.
