Michael Palin in North Korea

Postby milleplod » Fri Sep 21, 2018 12:16 pm

Just watched this on C5 catchup - I do like his travelogues and find him very watchable, and likeable. Highly recommended if you've not seen it - NK looks almost 'normal' a lot of the time, but the level of state control is scary, to put it mildly! If you had a bike there, I bet you wouldn't be allowed to 'individualise' it!

Michael Palin is well worth his salary. His trip to NK reminded me of a work trip I took across the Iron Curtain back in the early 1970's as an apprentice. We had 'aides' to ensure we got the job done without any 'difficulties' or so we were told. The town we were in was like a 1950's black and white television programme. Almost nothing in the shops, few cars, none of the locals would even try to speak to use outside work; even the blokes at work would only speak after getting 'nod' from our 'aides' and that was all work related.
After the 'wall' came down I went to eastern Germany/Poland on exercise and boy what a change.
