Kneeler outfit

Postby Sam » Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:59 am

Hi all,
Im new to BMW but have always had the urge to put a racing outfit on the road, I was browsing through fleabay and this R75 ongoing project jumped out at me so went ahead and purchased it.
The chassis was built by the previous owner from chrome molly but on closer inspection he has not managed to get two wheels pointing in the correct direction, so it will be onto the surface table to rectify this and change the chair wheel which looks to be from a scooter to a 10 inch minilight, both the front and rear are 16 inch, with Lockheed calipers all round.
I have picked up a spare motor ( the original crank cases were cut back not allowing me to fit a starter motor) which has been stripped and measured, I then bead blasted the cases, cylinder head has been twin plugged and the inlets splayed to give a direct flow using a 336 cam and Dellorto carbs. but still needing finished off, Kibblewhite valves came along with the original box of bits also Omega 10.5/1 high comp pistons, the crank was lightened and balanced to suit.
The original motor was being dry sumped but I am reverting back to wet simp for the road, the external pump ran off the end of the camshaft and the ignition from the crank. I shall be re installing a starter motor and shall need an alternator so thats why ignition and pump have to be removed, I have a Boyer ignition and twin output 6v coils to replace the race ignition. Not knowing the history of the con rods they were sent off to a metal improvement company to be shot peened this will increase fatigue strength of the rods allowing them to operate at higher stress levels.

I have tried to add pics but the message keeps on coming up" file too large" so may need help there.

Sam, welcome to the forum.
You paint a fascinating picture and I can't wait to see your machine on the road.
Do you have anyone willing to "sit" in the "chair" ?
Someone will be along in a minute to help you with re-sizing photos.

Cheers,
Saco Tattie will be in the chair ! I have to have a meeting with the MOT chap (ex sidecar racer collegue) I have a few hurdles to get over first but confident they can be sorted out easily. My ex passenger may be up for it though, the deadline will be for the Moidart run end of April setting off from Kinlochleven then watch the Pre-65 trial.

Posting Photos:

METHOD 1:
Using the Forum 'Upload Attachment' method you are limited to uploading a picture of not more than 1200 x 1200 pixels max dimensions, 250Kbytes max file size.
Any problems will be advised when you try it. You can then add up to three pictures/post.

Here's how:
1. Go to 'Full Editor & Preview'.
2. Scroll down and select 'Attachments' tab.
3. Select 'Add files' and browse for your picture (max 1200x1200 pixels and 250Kb filesize).
4. Add any 'File Comments' to be attached to the pic.
5. Place your cursor in the post where you want the pic to be located.
6. Select 'Place Inline'.
7. Repeat from (2) above for up to a total of three pics/post.
8. Select 'Submit'.

If your pics are too big (> 1200x1200 pixels and 250Kb filesize), see the following depending on the device you are using:

Windows: I use Windows Paint (tabs Home/Resize) which allows you to resize a pic and save it under a different filename
e.g. 'existing filename'_ small.

iPad/iPhone: For iPad/iPhone photo resize, go to the App Store and download a free Photo Resize App such as 'Simple Resize':
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/simple- ... 76379?mt=8

Mac: For Mac photo resize go to the Preview application where there is a resize function.

Make them smaller!

File size is likely too big!

That's odd! :-k

Has your device selected the original instead of the reduced pic for posting?

Can you reduce the pic size to around 600 x 800?

I have reduced it down to 400 x 300 and still no luck. The crankcase is a larger file and that posted ok.

I think the original file might be corrupted - can you take another pic?

If you are using Windows, load the file into 'Paint'.

Check the file size/pixels and use the Paint 'Resize' if necessary.

Save it under a different file name.

Try loading the new file into your post.

I had a little bit of Kitchen engineering incentive yesterday, the main spine for the chair hub was only 1 1/4 inch dia seeing as I shall be using a minilight wheel and wider tyre I decided to up the spine to 2". Using a plug with a 6mm hole insetred into the tube then using a 2" hole saw I proceeded to bore each intersection all done within the hour. Sometimes life becomes much simpler when you take the science out of the equation.

Fascinating project.

I saw a road legal Japanese engined kneeler on the road last year, leaving Stafford classic bike show heading towards Wolverhampton. I turned off my route to follow him and his female passenger to get a closer look.

It looked very uncomfortable, and despite being painted bright dayglow orange it was easily lost to sight when in traffic.

I assume you will have to MSVA it to get it road legal, or does it already have all that tedious stuff done?

Yes it shall have to be given the go over by VOSA and then an MOT every year. I have already spoke to VOSA to check for what needs to be done to make it road worthy, nothing drastic.

It will actually need registering to start with, which means Msva, if it doesn’t already have papers.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/mot ... e-approval

https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... val-msva-1

It is basic enough, apparently, but the bike will need to confirm to quite a few basic rules.
