Rear light fault showing but?

Postby Mike P » Sat Oct 31, 2020 5:18 pm

I had a rear light fault which I have cured by changing the front brake light switch. The bike is showing a rear light fault on the dash. There is no longer an obvious fault. All lights work correctly. Tried resetting it using the gs911, but won’t go. Anyone any ideas please?

Which bike would be useful ?

If its a 1200 Hexhead GS ??

The assembly has corrosion and possibly "ground Leakage or high resistance"

Hi, it’s a 1200gs, the rear light unit is clean as a whistle. Does this mean I have to follow the cables back looking for perhaps a tight cable tie that has worn through somewhere?

Don't forget that the CANBUS system is intelligent.
If, you have a rear tail light blown, the CANBUS will illuminate the brake light on half power, to mimic the tail light function.
Very easy to assume all is OK when it's not.

Take the red cover off to see exactly which filament (or LEDs) are lit.

Good Job PK posted or I would have missed this

Sometimes in behind the unit between the rear mudguard and the light section

Or as PK says One filament has gone and the ABS system is feeding a low current to the Brake lamp to simulate a rear "sidelamp"

Which "looks" correct from outside but actually has a blown filament

It’s a new bulb, but I’ll check anyway, thanks. I’ll also expose the wiring under the rear seat mudguard and see what I find. Really annoying as I plan to sell the bike and upgrade to a newer one.
